CAPITAL PLANNING
THE FUTURE OF OUR FACILITIES
WHERE ARE WE GOING?
The Â鶹¹ÙÍø is committed to optimizing the use of board-owned assets. This may be achieved by establishing facility partnerships for co-building opportunities when undertaking major capital projects, the leasing of space within current assets, the disposition of properties and engaging in long term planning. Capital planning activities will be well informed, well-coordinated, transparent, sustainable and supportive of student achievement and well-being.
The Â鶹¹ÙÍø's Updated Capital Plan was approved on February 25, 2020.
The Â鶹¹ÙÍø will continue to address the future accommodation needs of students across the district with a focus on the priorities as outlined within the Â鶹¹ÙÍø’s Capital Plan. No new accommodation reviews will be considered until the Ministry of Education’s revised Pupil Accommodation Review Guideline is complete and the moratorium on establishing accommodation reviews and school surplus is lifted. Exploring opportunities for collaborative capital projects and shared-space opportunities with municipalities, co-terminus school boards, community partners and agencies remains a priority.
ACCOMMODATION REVIEW PROCESS
The Â鶹¹ÙÍø is committed to working with community partners when undertaking capital planning, including when the Â鶹¹ÙÍø is beginning to develop options to address under-utilized space in its buildings. Further, the Â鶹¹ÙÍø is committed to ensuring that decisions regarding student accommodations are made with the involvement of an informed local community and are based on a broad range of criteria regarding the quality of the learning experience for students.
The Guide to Accommodation Reviews is a great resource for anyone interested in learning more.

AVAILABLE SPACE
On October 11, 2016, the Â鶹¹ÙÍø approved a list of schools in the board having unused space and that could accommodate an appropriate new community partnership.
Community partners are invited to indicate their interest in a new partnership with the Â鶹¹ÙÍø at any time of the year by completing an Application for Facility Partnership form. Completed forms can be forwarded to Gay Smylie, Acting Superintendent of Education, who can be reached at Gay.Smylie@nearnorthschools.ca or by phone at (705) 472-8170, extension 5004.
The Â鶹¹ÙÍø encourages community partners to notify the board when planning to build new facilities.â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹
2016-2017 Accommodation Review: North Bay Planning Area

An Initial Staff Report was presented to the Capital Planning Committee on December 13, 2016 for the North Bay Planning Area. This report went forward to the Â鶹¹ÙÍø of Trustees during the public session of the December 20, 2016 Â鶹¹ÙÍø meeting. A motion was passed to initiate an Accommodation Review for the following schools:
E.T. Carmichael Public School - School Information Profile
E.W. Norman Public School - School Information Profile
W.J. Fricker Public School - School Information Profile
Chippewa Secondary School - School Information Profile
West Ferris Secondary School - School Information Profile
Widdifield Secondary School - School Information Profile
A timeline and a meeting schedule for the Accommodation Review has been created to identify key dates in the process.
Under the new accommodation review process, the Accommodation Review Committee will act as an advisory group that represents the schools affected by a student accommodation review and will be the conduit for information shared between the Â鶹¹ÙÍø and the affected school communities.
The Accommodation Review Committee may provide feedback with on the staff recommended option in the Initial Staff Report and/or may also present alternative accommodation options, including a rationale for the options, as per Â鶹¹ÙÍø policy. The overall goal of the Accommodation Review Committee will be to provide the local perspective of stakeholders impacted by the decision of the Â鶹¹ÙÍø of Trustees, and to provide constructive feedback regarding the staff recommended option.
This committee has been formed according to the Â鶹¹ÙÍø’s student accommodation policy and represents a number of key voices in the process. The ARC committee will be meeting for an orientation session on February 1, 2017. It is within the prevue of the ARC to establish additional mechanisms or meetings for feedback.
